Turkish commanders welcomed in surprise visit to terror-hit southeast

ISTANBUL - The commanders of the Turkish military, including Chief of General Staff Gen. Ilker Basbug, paid an unannounced visit Wednesday to the country's terror-hit southeastern province of Sirnak. Locals welcomed the visit. (UPDATED)

The commanders met Sirnak Gov. Ali Yerlikaya early in the morning, the private Dogan News Agency, or DHA, reported.

 

High security measures had been taken for the commanders, whose visit aimed at inspecting army units in the border area, the report added.

 

Around 500 locals waving Turkish flags gathered outside the governor's offices to welcome Basbug and accompanying generals.Â

 

Basbug was briefed over the efforts underway in the region against the terrorist PKK organization, DHA reported.

The military commanders also paid an impromptu visit to local stores and met with members of the general public.Â
