İZMİR - Beside its clear İzmir victory, the Republican People’s Party, or CHP, won in the coastal provinces of Antalya, Muğla, Aydın and Mersin. In Muğla, CHP candidate Osman Gürün won the election with 46 percent, while the CHP’s candidate in Aydın, Özlem Çerçioğlu, won 26.3 percent of the vote. In Mersin, too, the CHP protected its stronghold as candidate Macit Özcan won with 30.99 percent.
As for the inner Aegean cities, the the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, protected its place in Denizli with a victory for incumbent Mayor Nizah Zeybekçi but lost Manisa, the hometown of former Turkish Grand National Assembly President and well-known AKP member Bülent Arınç, to National Movement Party, or MHP, candidate Cengiz Ergün. The AKP also lost Balıkesir to MHP candidate İsmail Ok.
There were no surprises in the local election in other tourist resorts:
ALANYA: Hasan Sipahioğlu of the Motherland Party, or ANAP Ğ 35.88 percent
BODRUM: Mehmet Kocadon of the DP Ğ 44.46 percent
DALAMAN: Sedat Yılmaz of the MHP Ğ 36 percent
DATÇA: Mustafa Şener Tokcan of the CHP Ğ 57.33 percent
DİDİM: Mümin Kamacı of the CHP Ğ 49.67 percent
FETHİYE: Behçet Saatçi of the MHP Ğ 40.80 percent
GERMENCİK: Ahmet Yavaşoğlu of the CHP Ğ 33.60 percent
İNCİRLİOVA: Fadime Orbay of the CHP Ğ 31.93 percent
KÖYCEĞİZ: Salih Erbay of the CHP Ğ 50.17 percent
KUŞADASI: Mehmet Esat Altıngün of the CHP Ğ 36.08 percent
MARMARİS: Ali Acar of the CHP Ğ 49.28 percent
MİLAS: Muhammet Tokat of the CHP Ğ 31.55 percent
ORTACA: Hasan Karaçelik of the CHP Ğ 43.04 percent
