Both Balbay, known as a fierce government critic, and Aydin appeared in court following their questioning by Turkish prosecutors on Thursday as part of the ongoing Ergenekon case.

The two had been detained in the sixth wave of the widely debated operation on July 1, 2008 and released by a court a few days later after questioning.     Â

The controversial Ergenekon case, which has divided Turkey, was filed against more than 80 people on the charge of forming an illegal organization to provoke a series of events that would pave the way for a military coup.   Â

Many believe however that the Ergenekon case is being used by the government as an excuse to suppress its opposition. Â
