ANKARA-Increasing violence has resulted in over 15 percent of students bringing knives and guns to schools, according to a study conducted by a Parliament investigation.

The parliamentary commission, formed in 2006 to investigate increasing levels of violence in schools, released its findings based on a survey of 26,000 students from 261 different schools.

The study showed 9.2 percent brought sharp objects such as knifes to school, while nearly 6 percent went so far as to bring guns. Of those who brought any kind of weapon to school, 56 sited an insecure environment as the reason, while 20 percent said they felt better when carrying some sort of weapon.

7 percent said they carried weapons because of what they saw on television, while 3.9 percent said they did so because their friends did too. 7.7 percent said they were members of gangs, of which most said they joined gangs to feel more secure. 3 percent said they gambled while 19.1 percent played the lottery and 3.3 percent did both. When it comes to cigarettes, 15.6 percent said they smoked at least once a week. 5.4 percent said they drank some sort of alcoholic beverage at least once a week. 6.9 percent said they had tried drugs at least once in their lives, while 37 percent said the same of cigarettes.
