A history of Turkish air disasters and near disasters

May 1, 2008 an Onur Air flight taking off from Antalya made an emergency landing back where it started after passengers reported a loud noise shortly after take-off and the aircraft began to fall. The pilot dumped most of the fuel over water and landed back at Antalya. No one was hurt in the incident. The aircraft had 166 passengers on board, most of whom were Dutch tourists returning to the Netherlands.
* Sept. 7, 2007 an Airbus A 321 aircraft lost cabin pressure on a flight from Dalaman to Birmingham. The plane had to make an emergency landing in Istanbul. Passengers also reported smoke coming from the left engine. Some passengers said their air masks were not functioning. Onur Air failed to provide any explanation to passengers.
* Atlasjet Flight 4203, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 with 49 passengers and 7 crew on board crashed Nov. 30, 2007, near Keçiborlu, Isparta in southwestern Turkey. There were no survivors.
* Jan. 8, 2003, Turkish Airlines Flight 634, an Avro RJ-100, named Konya, crashed while it was approaching to land at Diyarbakır Airport. 75 of 80 passengers and five crew died on board.
* Dec. 29, 1994, Turkish Airlines Flight 278, a Boeing 737-4Y0, named Mersin, crashed during its landing at Van Ferit Melen Airport. Five of the seven crew and 52 of the 69 passengers died.
* Jan. 16, 1983, Turkish Airlines Flight 158, a Boeing 727-2F2, named Afyon, landed about 50 meters short of the runway at Ankara Esenboğa Airport in driving snow, broke up and caught fire. 47 passengers died, all of the seven crew and 13 other passengers survived.
* The deadliest THY crash to date was Flight 981, which crashed in France on March 3, 1974, killing all 346 people on board. The main cause was a design fault on the cargo doors of the aircraft named Ankara. Prior to the Tenerife airport disaster, it was the deadliest aircraft disaster in the world.
* Turkish Airline's first accident occurred Feb. 17, 1959, when a Vickers Viscount Type 793, crashed in heavy fog just before landing at London Gatwick Airport. The flight was carrying Turkish Prime Minister Adnan Menderes and a governmental delegation to London to sign the London Agreements on the Cyprus issue. Menderes was among the 10 survivors of the 24 on board.
