Japan Airlines Flight 123 crashed in 1985. It remains the single most deadly aircraft disaster, killing all but four of the 520 on board. The aircraft suffered explosive decompression that destroyed its vertical stabilizer and severed hydraulic lines, making the 747 virtually uncontrollable.

* One of the deadliest mid air collision is the Charkhi Dadri disaster. It involved Saudia Flight 763 and Air Kazakhstan Flight 1907 over Haryana, India, in 1996. The crash was mainly the result of the Kazakh pilot flying at a lower altitude than given clearance for. 349 passengers and crew died from both aircraft.

* Jan. 31, 2000, about 16:21 Pacific standard time, Alaska Airlines Flight 261, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83, N963AS, crashed into the Pacific Ocean about 2.7 miles north of Anacapa Island, California. All 88 people on board were killed and the airplane was destroyed on impact.

* A US Airways plane with 155 people on board ditched into the Hudson River on Jan. 15, this year, apparently after striking at least one bird upon takeoff from New York's LaGuardia Airport, according to officials and passengers. Everyone on board survived. About 15 people were being treated at hospitals and others passengers evaluated at triage centers, reported CNN.

* The worst aviation accident to date remains the Tenerife disaster of March 27, 1977, when Pan Am Flight 1736 collided with KLM Flight 4805 on the runway of the Spanish island. A total of 583 people from both planes were killed. The KLM flight was taking off when it crashed into the taxiing Pan Am plane.
