The heated debate between Turkey's prime minister and the Israeli president was an unfortunate incident, the U.S. embassy in Ankara said in a statement on Friday.

The statement also said the embassy welcomed the call made by President Shimon Peres to Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan after the incident at a plenary session during the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland

Erdogan stormed off the stage after he was cut off by the debate moderator while responding to remarks made by the Israeli leader.�
