The Turkish army slammed some media organs, saying their coverage relating to former military officers violates basic human rights, and urged them to act responsibly.

The military's harsh statement came a day after a retired colonel committed suicide. Colonel Abdulkerim Kirca fatally shot himself in the head on Monday following a pro-government newspaper accused him of ordering the assassination of suspected PKK terrorists during the 1990s.

Certain circles are making "extrajudicial killings" instead of showing sensitivity, and such behavior violates human rights and do not abide by any legal or ethical rules, the military said in a statement posted in its website on Tuesday.

"Now it is time for the authorized and responsible agencies, including responsible media organs, to take measures, instead of making verbal expressions, to fulfill their duties," the statement said.

A funeral service for Kirca, who has been in a wheel chair since 1998 after being injured during a clash with PKK terrorists, is being held in Ankara on Tuesday, attended by Turkish army chief, Gen. Ilker Basbug.

Kirca was presented with a "State Honorary Medal" in 2004 by former president, Ahmet Necdet Sezer.Â
