ANKARA - Citizenship for Turkey’s most renowned poet, Nazım Hikmet, will be returned 57 years after it was rescinded and 45 years after he died.
Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Çiçek, speaking after yesterday’s cabinet meeting, said the ministers had been asked to sign a decree that restored Hikmet’s citizenship. Until his death at 62 in Moscow, Hikmet spent many years in jail or in exile due to his communist beliefs. Returning Hikmet’s body from Moscow to Turkey was up to the family, he said.
