ANKARA - A senior member of the Israeli Security Cabinet said Tuesday his country did not intend to embarrass Turkey after it was revealed Ankara was not notified of the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip.
"We had no intention of embarrassing Turkey. Turkey is a major partner for us," Isaac Herzog told a group of Turkish journalists via a live videoconference.
Outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s failure to inform his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, last Monday has led to a crisis of confidence. Disappointment was evident at the weekend when Erdoğan said the Israeli actions in Gaza were a sign of "disrespect."
Herzog added, "Our relations with Turkey are unique and special. We have common interests in the region. Turkey is a strategic friend and important peace broker."
