Sick trees of Istanbul nursed back to health

The rehabilitation project, which was started in 2001 by the Parks and Gardens Department and was extended in 2004, has helped 2,441 trees regain health. Trees damaged due to age or other factors, 708 in total in Kanlıca Square, Çırağan avenue, Yıldız Park, the Aşiyan neighborhoods, Sarıyer Piyasa and Yeniköy avenues and the Süleymaniye, Fatih and Sümbül Efendi mosques were tended to, in addition to trees in the Florya Atatürk Forest, Fethipaşa and Beykoz plantations.

The study formed the bases of a book
The project is also part of a scientific study on the maintenance of trees. The study formed the basis of a book, "Nursing city trees and ornamental plants, and trimming tips." The department also sent the book to universities, national libraries, local governments, governors’ offices and nongovernmental organizations.

After this rehabilitation stage of the ongoing project, the department will search for trees that are old and in need of help in other public spaces. The project, which aims to record old and ill trees in public places of Istanbul, will continue for two years.
