İzmir’s ruins in danger

İZMİR - Highlighting there were 22 ruins and 10 museums within the borders of İzmir, Abdülaziz Ediz, vice chairman of Culture and Tourism Provincial Directorate, is concerned, however, none of them, except for the ancient city of Ephesus, are properly protected.
"We can keep security guards at the museums. However, we cannot keep them at night at the ruins, other than Ephesus," Ediz said. "İzmir region is very rich in ruins and historical artifacts. The artifacts illegally dug up here are being smuggled abroad because of a lack of protection," said Hakkı Berksü, group vice chairman of Republican People’s Party, İzmir Provincial Council.
"We need to ensure the protection of historical artifacts in this region, by a project either carried out by the Special Provincial Administration, or supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism," he said.
