ANKARA - Two police officers were killed and six others, including three other officers, were injured when two members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK opened fire on a roadblock on a major highway in the southern province of Hatay.
According to reports, traffic police initiated a routine check on the main TEM highway near the town of İskenderun at 11:30 a.m. yesterday morning. Soon afterward, suspects from a passing car opened fire on the police roadblock, killing one officer and injuring two others, one of whom died soon later. Three civilians, including a one-year-old, were injured when the fire from the car hit their house.
The Hatay Police Department said the attackers belonged to the PKK, reported the Anatolia news agency.
A firefight erupted when police found the car at the nearby village of Bitişik, where two other policemen were wounded. The car was found and the driver was detained, while two PKK members fled toward nearby mountains, reports said.
