Commenting on a TRT 2 program, Speaker of the Turkish Parliament, Koksal Toptan, noted that secularity was not under threat in Turkey, asserting that debates over whether or not it was being threatened were completely normal.
Said Toptan: "Turkey is a very unique country. We accepted the principle of secularity in 1937, but we had already embraced it as a way of life in years before that." Toptan noted that he believed the arguments over the turban needed to be removed from the political agenda, noting "It is to no one's advantage that this topic be made into ingredients for a social problem or a political debate. There is actually no need for changes to be made to the Constitution to solve the turban problem. It could have been solved by making changes to the YOK (Board of Higher Education) laws."
