Speaker of the Turkish Parliament (TBMM), Koksal Toptan, commented yesterday that debates over Kurdish language education would "divide" Turkey, noting "If the official education language is moved from being just Turkish, we would lose our writing and speaking language."

Toptan's statements on the matter came in an interview broadcast yesterday on CNN Turk. The TBMM Speaker also commented on the "turban" or headscarf issues that are a reoccuring theme on the Ankara agenda, noting:

"The reduction of the work we are doing on the new Constitution to simply the matter of the headscarf disturbs me. The "turban" question cannot be solved by the Constitution. We cannot put a law stating 'Universities will allow turbans' into the Constitution. But I do not find it right that the higher board of education sees fit to ban the turban."
