Hayrunnisa Gul a no-show at Ankara reception

Newly elected President Abdullah Gul attended the evening reception in honor of the start of the new Turkish Parliament (TBMM) legislative year yesterday without his wife, Hayrunnisa Gul. For her part, Hayrunnisa Gul has been the focus of intense media and public speculation due to the headscarf or "turban" she wears, with sources in the capital querying as to which state events she will and won't be attending in the future.
The president avoided answering reporters' questions about the whereabouts of Hayrunnisa Gul, arriving at the reception later than expected, and after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had already departed. The reception yesterday in Ankara was hosted by the new Speaker of the TBMM, Koksal Toptan, and his wife, Saime Toptan. Top ranked officers from the Turkish military were also notably absent from the reception.
