Former head of the Turkish Constitutional Court, Mustafa Bumin, spoke with the Hurriyet yesterday about the new constitutional framework which proposes allowing the wearing of "turbans" or headscarves in universities. Said Bumin, "They do not know or cannot see the realities of Turkey."
Bumin, who has signed off on many important decisions since 1974 on the controversial question of whether headscarved Turkish girls and women were allowed to study in Turkish universities, also noted:
"If they say in the Constitution 'All outfits are allowed,' they should not suppose that this will stay limited to the turban. I have two serious worries: one is that women who are entirely covered will also be allowed to attend the universities, and the other is that other religious outfits will also be allowed." Bumin also expressed the sentiment that soon "they won't allow women not wearing the turban into the universities," with the excuse that "We live in a country which is 98% Muslim."
