The mayor of the Istanbul district of Sisli, Mustafa Sarigul, is preparing to open a strong offensive against the current general leader of the main opposition CHP Party, Deniz Baykal, in a bid to change the direction that the party is taking.
Appearing in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir this week, Sarigul spoke to local residents, asserting that he had come to "apologize to the people of the Southeast and of Diyarbakir in the name of the CHP and Mustafa Kemal Ataturk." Sarigul told audiences that the reason that the CHP had not produced a single MP from the Southeast was because Baykal and his close circles were "political barons." Warned Sarigul:
"Baykal: it is time for you and your friends to go. You may be general leader of the party due to the delegates you have chosen, but you will not become Prime Minister through the votes of the people of the nation. For forty years we may have said 'Baykal,' but we never said 'Stay forever.'"
