The German Bild am Sonntag newspaper has run an article proclaiming newly elected President Abdullah Gul's wife, Hayrunissa Gul, as one of the "3 women sparking interest in the world" in recent days.

According to the newspaper, Hayrunnisa Gul is joined in this league with French President Nicolas Sarkozy's wife Cecilia Sarkozy, as with Argentinian State President's wife Christina Kirchner. Part of the article on the 3 women read as follows:

"One of them prefers shopping over a picnic with President George W. Bush. The other is playing the role of Evita. And the third, despite the fact that it is problematic, wears a headscarf. All three are the wives of state leaders."

Focusing specifically on Hayrunnisa Gul, the Bild am Sonntag article reads: "Her turban is always very neat and ordered. She ties it according to old Turkish tradition, tightly, without a strand of hair or the nape of her neck showing. Hayrunnisa Gul will be the first devout Muslim to move into the Cankaya Presidential Palace, alongside her husband. She wears her headscarf in the religious 'turban' style, and for many people, this is a sort of 'red flag.' Because in Turkey, state and religious matters are separate. The headscarf is banned in public offices and organizations, in universities, and in the parliament. It is worried now that along with Hayrunnisa Gul, the path to Turkey's Islamicization is being opened. The military has threatened a coup. But it doesn't appear that Hayrunnisa Gul has been fazed. She says: 'The turban covers only my head, not my brain.'"
