Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to receive a security briefing today from the top commander of the Turkish Armed Forces, General Yasar Buyukanit. Sources in Ankara confirm that the decision for today's security briefing was made at the "terror summit" focusing on PKK activity in Turkey and Northern Iraq last week at the Prime Ministerial offices.
It is expected that Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul will participate in the meeting today.
Along similar lines, yesterday the capital saw a 4 hour meeting of the National Security Council (MGK) which focused largely on PKK-related terror, and additionally on Cyprus. In a statement issued after the MGK meeting, which was led by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, it was underlined that PKK terror would be "struggled against under every condition," and that this struggle would "be carried out along with the people of Turkey, and based on a foundation of democracy and legality." The MGK meeting yesterday also dealt with police and security force intelligence reports from the Turkish-Iraqi border, where there is currently more activity than normal, and a higher troop build-up than usual.
