Thousands of protestors gathered in Izmir on Sunday for a Republican rally that organisers say could dwarf similar protests in Ankara and Istanbul last month.

“We are expecting over 1.5 million participants at today’s rally,” said Ferda Kardelen, head of the organising committee.
The four corners of the city have been decorated with the Turkish flag. One store owner, Zeki Fuat Gençpınar, said that thousands of flags brought in from outside the province in advance of the protest were nearly sold out.
The rally kicked off between 8:00 and 10:00 o’clock in Alsancak Port and Republican Square and will finish up in Gündoğdu Square with live music.
