Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has made sharp comments in reference to the EU's stance on Turkey's quest for full membership, saying yesterday before his ruling AKP group in Ankara, "Don't wear yourselves or us out. If you have some thoughts, make some decisions on them, and let us all continue down our roads."
Speaking further, Erdogan said "The EU is on a serious search for solutions to problems such as security, energy, expansion, and an ageing population. In fact, Turkey is in a key role in terms of being able to help the EU with these problems. We know that there have been many difficulties down this road, and that there will continue to be these difficulties. But just as we have managed to obtain our rights up until today, we will continue in the same way from now on. We are not expecting favors from anyone. We simply want whatever we have a right to. If the EU thinks negatively about Turkey, it needs to make its decision, and we will continue on our way. Don't think that we are only speaking like this here, we are telling them this same thing face to face......We are saying to them 'Don't wear yourselves out, don't wear us out. If this is how you think, make your decision, and we will continue down our path. Let's not lose any more energy or money on this. We are spending and so are you, let's stop then. We are not trying to enter the EU to become baggage, we are coming to relieve them of some of their extra baggage. You don't seem aware of this.' We have said all this."
