Istanbul’s population now 23 million?

A study by 958 local area offices shows that Istanbul’s population may have grown to 23 million – considerably higher than the 10 million citizens who were registered in the 2000 census.

Of 9 million people whose records were studied in detail, however, 1.7 million were counted twice. Experts believe that a closer review of the 14 million other records gathered by Mobile Electronic System Integration (MOBESE) could show a high ratio of multiple records.
