Joost Lagendijk: I have doubts about the AKP's EU approach

Joost Lagendijk, co-chair of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliament Commission, has told opposition DYP leader Mehmet Agar, during a visit between the two in Ankara this week, that he has doubts about the current ruling AKP administration's approach towards EU accession.
Lagendijk's comments sparked the following response from Agar yesterday in the DYP headquarters:
"The AKP has always made EU accession into a domestic policy question....We have never done so."
Speaking after the meeting between the two men, Lagendijk said "We are of course aware that these days, the subject of Turkish accession into the EU is not a very popular one. But Turkey must proceed ahead, in a very clear and decisive way, with political leadership, towards the EU."
