Cardinal Ruini, the head of the Italian Board of Bishops, has arrived in Turkey to lead a mass in memory of Priest Andrea Santoro on the one year anniversary of his death. Priest Santoro was shot to death by a Trabzon youth in the church he had led in that Black Sea city.
Said Cardinal Ruini yesterday, "Santoro death has greatly saddened us, but he was a gift to the Roman Church from God. Because of Santoro, the list of people who have given their lives for God has grown richer." Also arriving in Turkey yesterday to help celebrate the life and mourn the death of Santoro were the priest's mother, Maria Polselli, his sisters, Maddalena and Imelda, and his uncle, Antonello Polselli. They were greeted on arrival in Istanbul by Vatican representative Georges Marovitch, and leave for Trabzon today after spending one night in Istanbul.
