David Rouiller had been listed officially as missing for 5 years before turning up in the Kurdish documentary, posing with Kalashnikov in hand. Claude Rouiller, who now works as a Swiss representative at the United Nations center in Genevre, has met with severe criticism from Turks regarding his public stance towards his son. The elder Rouiller explained to the Swiss newspaper "Der Kleine Bund," that he felt his son had found meaning in his life, saying "If my son has found meaning through this work he is doing, then I am the happiest person in the world. Even though some might not like this, I am proud of him." Claude Rouiller's wife, Ursula Rouiller, reportedly went to the Northern Iraqi PKK camp to visit her son David, and expressed joy simply at having found where he was.
David Rouiller had disappeared in 2001, telling his parents at the time he was going to Paris.
