US appointed coordinator for the struggle against PKK terror, General Joseph Ralston, has commented in Ankara on the necessity of not addressing the PKK directly in any official manner. Said Ralston yesterday, "It is not even a question, we do not engage with terrorists." Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan accepted Ralston in Ankara, noting "Whatever we have to do to fight terror, we will. I have already expressed to both President Bush and Secretary of State Rice which steps have to be taken to get rid of the terror presence in Northern Iraq. We need to take immediate precautions. The latest attack in Diyarbakir shows us the inhuman face of teror."
General Ralston for his part spoke yesterday about the large exposion Tuesday evening in Diyarbakir, promising to relay to President Bush details from the incident in Turkey's predominently Kurdish southeastern city. Ralston also promised that concrete steps would be taken in the US-Turkish anti-PKK coordination efforts, saying "The Turkish public will see some real advances."
