Groundbreaking ceremony for the Ilisu Dam & Hydroelectric Plant on Dicle River will be held on Saturday with participation of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Energy & Natural Resources Minister Hilmi Guler. When the construction of the dam is completed, it will be the second biggest dam of Turkey as far as the capacity of its lake. Also Ilisu Hydroelectric Plant will be Turkey's 4th biggest one after Ataturk, Keban and Karakaya.

The construction of the dam is planned to be completed in 2013. It will be built on Dicle River and will be situated in southeastern city of Sirnak.

Ilisu is 45 kilometers far from Turkey's Syria border. The dam will have a reservoir capable of storing 11 billion cu.m. of water when completed.

Nearly 7,000 workers will work in the construction of the dam.

Hasankeyf Antique city, as well as 199 historical locations in southeastern cities of Diyarbakir, Mardin, Siirt and Batman will be inundated by Ilisu Dam.

On the other hand, activities to protect Hasankeyf Ancient city are underway with vehemence, activists said.
