Former CIA agent Philip Giraldi, who was deputy regional chief in Istanbul during the 1980's, has said "While I was in Istanbul, it was the biggest CIA base in all of Europe."
Giraldi also said that, unlike the Russians, the CIA had not been able to infiltrate the Turkish intelligence services, although a top level Turkish authority had agreed to work for the CIA for "large amounts of money" at the time. Giraldi's accounts were published on an internet site called "Balkanalysis" this week.
