The chief prosecutor from the Turkish Supreme Court, Nuri Ok, has opened an investigation into the political congress held by largely Kurdish-backed Democratic Society (DTP) Party over the weekend.

The congress, attended by hundreds of DTP delegates, was noted not only for its numerous posters and banners in support of the outlawed PKK and its imprisoned leader Abdullah Ocalan, but also for the fact that it did not open with the requisite singing of the Turkish national anthem, nor was there a portrait of Ataturk hung anywhere in the congress salon.

Guards placed at the doors were also noted by sources to be dressed in the traditional outfits of mountain-based PKK fighters.

The Supreme Court chief prosecutor is also examining the speech to delegates made by newly elected head of the DTP, Ahmet Turk, in which Turk told the audience "It is not possible for us to distance ourselves from the PKK. There can be no peace plan which excludes the PKK."
