Celebrations commemorating the 553rd anniversary of the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul took place this weekend in Istanbul, with special Ottoman style galleys set sail on the Golden Horn symbolizing the war ships used by the Turkish forces in their victory. The celebrations were sponsored by the Istanbul Municipality, and featured men on horseback representing Fatih Sultan Mehmet, as well as his top military advisors.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the Dolmabahce Palace, Istanbul Governor Muammer Guler said "553 years ago, Fatih ordered the surrounding of the city from here. And 87 years ago, Ataturk left from this spot to start the war of independence for the Turkish Republic....."
