May 19th Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day is being celebrated on Friday throughout Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
The first ceremony in Ankara took place in Anitkabir, the Mausoleum of Ataturk, the Founder of Turkish Republic.
Pillars of state headed by Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer visited the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Chief of General Staff Gen. Hilmi Ozkok, Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal, Constitutional Court President Tulay Tugcu, State Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Abdullatif Sener, Foreign Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul, Council of
Ministers members, force commanders, Supreme Court Chief Judge Osman
Aslan, Council of State Chairwoman Sumru Cortoglu, Chairman of the Government Accounting Bureau Mehmet Damar, Supreme Court Chief
Prosecutor Nuri Ok, Motherland Party (ANAVATAN) leader Erkan Mumcu, some other parliamentarians and executives attended the ceremony. They laid a wreath to the tomb of Ataturk, and observed a minute of silence in the memory of Ataturk.
Later, President Sezer signed special book of the mausoleum saying, “on May 19th, which is a turning point in Turkish history, we celebrate Youth and Sports Day and at the same time the 125th year of your birth.” “The Turkish nation is proud of your esteemed personality. The Turkish Republic is trying to fulfill your great ideals by getting
strength from your principles and reforms. Secular and democratic Republic will reach its targets under the protection of all institutions and organizations,” he said.
Sezer said, “Turkish youth is determined to preserve Ataturk's reforms and principles. Secular and democratic Republic of Turkey willlive forever.”
A ceremony was also held in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to mark the May 19th Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and SportsDay.
