The leader of the Greek authority in Southern Cyprus, Tasos Papadopoulos, has made a comparison between the Northern Cypriot Turks and the terrorist group PKK. In a statement to the Greek newspaper Eleftiros Tipos, Papadopoulos responded to a question about the chance that the US or any other country might officially recognize Northern Cyprus, saying "These countries might recognize the occupying regime in Northern Cyprus.

But they should think twice about the dangers they will provoke for countries which have divisive, separationist groups within them. At the head of this list is Turkey, where millions of Kurds live."

In regards to US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's recent trip to Athens, where she, before stopping off in Ankara, called on the Greeks to support the Turkish bid for EU membership, Papadopoulos had this to say: "We are not about to sacrifice the benefits of Cypriot hellenism for the reward of gaining US favors. As it is, we cannot compete with Turkey for US favors."
