Protests yesterday in Istanbul following the city-sponsored destruction of illegal "gecekondu" housing in the Sariyer-Derbent area of the city brought out hundreds of residents in a show of anger against city officials. Shouting "Derbent is ours and will remain ours," a group estimated to number around 700 marched towards police brought in to reinforce the situation, throwing stones and shouting slogans as they did so.
The stone throwing in turn led to the police holding up special shields and spraying tear gas into the air, which in turn led to injury on the part of many residents, including some primary school students who had joined in the protest.
