Turkish Justice Minister Cemil Cicek said on Thursday, he will request the court of appeals to again examine the release of Mehmet Ali Agca, the man who attempted to kill Pope John Paul II in 1981 and who killed journalist Abdi Ipekci in 1979. ''As the Justice Minister, I will ask the Supreme Court of Appeals to examine the release of Agca,'' Justice Minister Cemil Cicek told a news conference in Istanbul. Cicek added that Agca's release did not mean he could not be jailed again on the same charges.
Cicek indicated that Agca's case be reviewed to make sure that no errors were committed in the complicated case. His release today does not mean that the release is a guaranteed right, Cicek told reporters, noting there had been several cases in which prisoners released by mistake were returned to prisons.
