At a liturgy which took place at the Greek-Orthodox Patriarchate in Istanbul on Wednesday to celebrate St. Andrews Day, Patriarch Bartholomew highlighted the importance of a dialogue between Christian churches. St. Andrew is celebrated as the first apostle to preach the Christian gospel in and around Istanbul in the years following Jesus' death.
Speaking to the press after the ceremony, the Patriarch said that the pope had accepted President Sezer's invitation to visit Turkey. The visit to Ankara and Istanbul is expected in 2006.
