62 percent of Turks support EU membership Eurobarometre says

12 percent of Turkish people think negatively about Turkey's EU membership bid, while 20 percent are indecisive. What is striking about the results of the survey is that the number of those who think that EU membership is beneficial has decreased in the mentioned period when compared with the first half of 2004.

To the question what the EU means for them, 48 percent of Turks answer as economic welfare, 34 percent as social protection, and 30 percent as free movement and the opportunity to have education and work in EU member states.

According to the survey, 74 percent of Turks have concerns about unemployment while 45 percent about economic situation.

Turks, who have joined the survey, do not have sufficient information about the EU. Only 25 percent of those who joined the survey think they have information about the EU.

On the other hand, the armed forces is the most reliable institution for both the EU and Turks. 69 percent of the EU citizens and 89 percent of Turks have confidence in the Turkish Armed Forces.

According to the survey, the majority of Turkish people are proud to be a Turk. The rate of such people is about 96 percent. On the other hand, 48 percent of Turks are proud to be European while only 7 percent think they don't feel like a European.

38 percent of Turkish people seem to support rightist parties, while 33 percent leftist parties. 59 percent of Turks fear that Turkish will be used less after Turkey becomes an EU member, and 57 percent think that the New Turkish Lira (YTL) will be withdrawn from circulation.
